Do you know about the Tao?
A YouTube video with this title popped up in our family group chat. It was a video secretly filmed by a YouTuber who went around asking people if they knew about the Tao. This kind of thing has been happening for decades, where passers-by are stopped on the street and asked the question about their Tao. The conclusion was that the questioners would perform a ceremony for the ancestors of passers-by (who were lost somewhere) and in return, the ancestors would help the passers-by in their endeavors. Of course, the cost of the ceremony was to be paid by passers-by. While watching the video, I was impressed by the YouTuber's acting, but in the end, the questioners' Tao felt too pitiful.
One day, I had to give a company presentation for a new project.
"Oh! Those laundry baskets was very popular on an online shopping mall last summer!" exclaimed one of the meeting participants as we introduced our projects.
"I bought two of them too," another person said.
I was even more surprised.
'The Tao of design' is to make something that sells well. (That's my conclusion.)
To achieve this, first, it must have eye-catching and innovative beauty.
Second, it must be easy to use.
Third, it must be cost-effective to produce. (This is becoming increasingly important.)
Fourth, it must be easy to maintain.
And if it's a large household item, one more thing is added these days: a structure that can be delivered cheaply is better.
As the customer's standards and requirements become higher and more stringent, sometimes I feel like 'designing' is 'practicing the Tao'.
